PROMOTING AWARENESS
The Vision: Telling Nature's Story
For those who know me, you’ll know the Shropshire Hills hold a special place in my heart. The jagged, quartzite tors and the vast, beautiful heathland of the Stiperstones offer a backdrop unlike anywhere else in England. It's a place of ancient geology, rich folklore, and, most importantly, a vital sanctuary for some incredible, and sometimes vulnerable, wildlife.
❋ The Vision: Telling Nature's Story
This isn't just about taking pretty pictures; it’s about creating a comprehensive visual record to support the reserve's monumental expansion. The recent declaration of the Stiperstones Landscape NNR as part of the King's Series of National Nature Reserves has more than tripled the protected area, bringing together a vast landscape of heathland, ancient woodland, bogs, and acidic grasslands.
My role, through the lens of a camera, is to help document the success of conservation efforts and showcase the biodiversity that this landscape-scale partnership is safeguarding. From the return of upland birds like the Red Grouse and Skylark to the fragile insects like the Bilberry Bumblebee, every photograph will be a testament to the power of collective conservation.
❋ A True Partnership Effort
The scale of the new NNR is vast, and its success hinges on collaboration. This project is a celebration of the dedicated individuals and organisations who are making this possible.
Natural England: Our guiding force, committed to protecting and restoring our natural world.
Core Partners: Shropshire Wildlife Trust, Shropshire Council and others, whose unified management strategy is key to creating a more connected and resilient landscape.
Landowners and Farmers: Crucial to the reserve's future. The commitment of local landowners to manage their land for nature, often through projects like the 'Back to Purple' initiative to restore heathland, is inspiring. Their local knowledge is irreplaceable.
Local Communities and Volunteers: The real boots on the ground! The dedication of local people and volunteer groups, whether conducting wildlife surveys or carrying out vital habitat management, is what turns conservation goals into reality. We're looking to capture the spirit of this community-driven effort.
❋ Get Involved: Your View Matters
I'll be out on the hill for countless hours, seeking those magical moments when nature reveals itself. But the story of the Stiperstones is for everyone to tell.
I encourage you—the local community, visitors, and fellow photographers—to share your own experiences. Whether it’s a picture of the iconic quartzite tors, a sighting of a rare butterfly, or a shot of a volunteer work party, your images help connect people to this extraordinary place.
Together, we can ensure that the wild heart of the Stiperstones continues to thrive for generations to come. Keep an eye out for updates as this project unfolds!
❋ The Vision of the GuardiansFor years, nature was often confined to small, fenced-off pockets. But nature does not thrive in isolation. The Guardians of The Ridge project was born from a simple, radical idea: that by connecting the Stiperstones to the surrounding valleys, farms, and churchyards, we could create a "nature recovery network" capable of weathering the challenges of a changing climate.
As a photographer, my goal has always been to bridge the gap between the grand scale of the landscape and the intimate stories of those who call it home.
