Behind the Lens: Why I’m Championing the "Guardians of the Ridge" Project
There is something hauntingly beautiful about the Stiperstones. If you’ve ever stood atop the Devil’s Chair while the wind whips across the heather, you know it’s a place that feels ancient, rugged, and—above all—wild.
I’ve always believed that to protect a landscape, people first have to fall in love with it. That’s exactly why I’m so excited to highlight a new photography project that is close to my heart: "Guardians of the Ridge."
This isn't your average photography series. It’s a visual tribute to the Stiperstones Landscape National Nature Reserve (NNR) and the incredible community fighting to preserve it.
A Landscape Reborn
The timing for this project couldn’t be better. The Stiperstones NNR has recently undergone a massive expansion as part of the King’s Series, tripling in size to a staggering 1,562 hectares.
This isn't just about more space for Sunday walks; it’s about securing a future for:
Unique Habitats: From high-altitude bogs to the iconic, jagged quartzite tors.
Threatened Species: Providing a safe haven for the Red Grouse and the rare bilberry bumblebee and many other species.
Climate Action: Protecting our natural carbon stores and improving local water quality.
It Takes a Village (and a Photographer)
What I love most is that I am not just looking at the birds and the bees; I am looking at the people.
The "Guardians" in the title refers to the coalition of Natural England, Shropshire Wildlife Trust, local landowners, other partners and tireless volunteers. Conservation is often a quiet, behind-the-scenes struggle. I am hoping my lens is finally bringing that hard work into the light, documenting the farmers who manage the land with nature in mind and the volunteers who spend their weekends restoring vital habitats.
I am known for spending years to capture a single perfect shot. That level of dedication is exactly what this landscape deserves."
A Visual Legacy
For me, "Guardians of the Ridge" is about more than just art. It’s a tool for change. By capturing the essence of the Shropshire Hills, this project aims to:
Raise Awareness: Showing the world why our upland heaths are a national treasure.
Honour Effort: Giving a face to the local heroes who protect our "backyard."
Secure Funding: Creating a powerful visual case for future conservation support.
